PROCEEDINGS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF THE PARISH OF CONCORDIA, STATE OF LOUISIANA, TAKEN AT A REGULAR MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2018 

 

The School Board of the Parish of Concordia, State of Louisiana, met in Regular Session at the Concordia Parish School Board office in Vidalia, Louisiana, on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at 6:00 o’clock p.m.  The meeting was called to order by Dr. Raymond Riley, Sr. who, after prayer and the Pledge, declared that the Board was ready for the transaction of business.

 

Members present were Mr. Warren Enterkin, Ms. Mary Campbell, Mr. Fred Butcher, Mrs. Carolyn Bradford, Mrs. Cheryl Probst, Mr. Jeffery Goodman, Mr. John Bostic, Mr. Ricky Raven, and Dr. Raymond Riley.

 

Committee Reports were presented.  Ms. Campbell of the Educational/Personnel Policy Committee stated that resignations and personnel were discussed.  Mr. Butcher of the Finance Committee stated that invoices and check and balance system for athletics were reviewed.  Dr. Riley of the Buildings and Grounds Committee stated that works orders, surplus items for auction, and general maintenance items such as football fields, gym floors, and roof issues were discussed.

 

It was moved by Mr. Raven, seconded by Mr. Bostic and carried to approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting held on July 12, 2018.

 

It was moved by Mr. Raven, seconded by Mrs. Probst and carried to approve invoices in the amount of $1,358,414 for the month of July 2018.

It was moved by Mr. Raven, seconded by Mr. Goodman and carried to allow Mr. Tom O’Neal to take the bids for janitorial supplies under advisement and be granted the authority to award to the lowest bidder that meets specifications.

Mr. Butcher made a motion, seconded by Ms. Campbell, to enter into Executive Session to discuss personnel for Ferriday schools.

The Board entered into Executive Session at 7:00 p.m.

 

It was moved by Mrs. Probst, seconded by Ms. Campbell and carried to return to Regular Session at 7:35 p.m.

 

Mr. Butcher stated that we need to make some pay adjustments for upper-level administrators.  Mr. Butcher stated that some administrators deal with part of the school system, while others deal with the whole school system.  He asked that the Superintendent devise job titles for the upper-level administrators.  Mr. Butcher asked that job titles for upper-level administration be uniform and fair across the board.  The Organizational Chart concerning Supervisors and Directors needs to be looked at.   

 

Mr. Butcher made a motion, seconded by Ms. Campbell, to add “Academic Coaches” to the Agenda.  There would be two new positions that would be assigned to schools that contain non-certified teachers.  Mr. Butcher asked the Superintendent to put together a job description for these positions if this motion passes.

The vote was not unanimous; therefore, the item will not be added to the agenda.  Mr. Butcher would like the Academic Coaches item be added to the agenda for September 13, 2018, regular meeting or a special meeting.

 

Dr. Riley stated that he had some comment cards; however, there was no motion on the floor, so the item cannot be discussed.

Superintendent Shirley made the following announcements:

 

First day of school is Friday, August 10; 12:30 dismissal.

 

We are up 80 students as of today, but will know more in the next few days to see how many warm bodies show up.

 

This past week, our teachers returned to work and have attended in-services for our new reading curriculum called ARC – American Reading Company.

 

VPD, CPSO, and other First Responders hosted a four-hour training this week with crisis team members from all 11 schools.  Discussed school safety, school shootings, learned to tie tourniquets properly and visited the shooting range. 

 

Merritt Hospital trainers met with 40 plus coaches, cheer sponsors, band directors, etc. to discuss heat exhaustion, concussions first aid, and sports-related injuries last Monday.

 

Meet the Trojans for Saturday has been postponed.

 

Football scrimmages begin next week for VHS & FHS.
