PROCEEDINGS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF THE PARISH OF CONCORDIA, STATE OF LOUISIANA, TAKEN AT THE COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 1993.

 

The School Board of the Parish of Concordia, State of Louisiana, met in committee at the Concordia Parish School Board Office in Vidalia, Louisiana, on Tuesday, March 16, 1993 at five-thirty (5:30) o'clock p.m.  The meeting was called to order by the Honorable J.W. Calhoun, President, who declared that the Board, after prayer led by Mrs. Marie Cowan and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, was ready for the transaction of business.

 

Members present were Honorable J.W. Calhoun; Rev. Johnnie Brown; Mrs. Marie Cowan; Mrs. Polly Miley; Mr. Manson Nelson; Mr. Charles Partridge; and Mr. Walter Stampley.

 

Members absent:  Mr. Jerry King; Mrs. Georgia Washington.

 

Mr. Tom O'Neal, Director of Business Affairs discussed the financial report and answered questions.

 

Mr. Julius Huhn, Chapter I Director discussed placing a parent center at Vidalia Lower Elementary School and asked the Board for permission to advertise for a building for this purpose.

 

Superintendent Lee discussed the proposed 1993-94 school calendar and answered questions.

 

Superintendent Lee discussed the current qualifications for substitute teachers and recommended that the Board reduce the qualifications from 30 college hours to 24 college hours.

 

Dr. Pete Peterman, Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction discussed the committee meeting on returning parish high schools to a 6-period day.  He informed the Board that the committee voted unanimously to return two (2) high schools to a 6-period day during the 1993-94 school year with Monterey beginning the process during the 1994-95 session.

 

Mr. H.L. Irvin, Maintenance Supervisor, informed the board of the status of current roof repair and stated that there are seven (7) roofs left to be bid.  They are Vidalia Lower Elementary, Ferriday Junior High, Ferriday Kindergarten Center, Ridgecrest, Vidalia Upper Elementary and Ferriday Lower Elementary.

 

Superintendent Lee updated the Board on the proposed MFP cuts for 1993-94 school year.  He stated that if proposed cuts are implemented, results would be disastrous.  However, if the parish generates additional revenues through a tax, the state will match anywhere from 50%-80%.

 

A video taped excerpt from a 60-Minutes television program was shown.   The tape, entitled "The Economy Stupid" was provided by Mayor Copeland.


 

The meeting was adjourned at seven twenty-eight (7:28) o'clock p.m.
