PROCEEDINGS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF THE PARISH OF CONCORDIA, STATE OF LOUISIANA, TAKEN AT THE SPECIAL MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1993.

 

The School Board of the Parish of Concordia, State of Louisiana, met in special session at the Concordia Parish School Board Office in Vidalia, Louisiana, on Tuesday, May 18, 1993 at five-thirty (5:30) o'clock p.m.  The meeting was called to order by the Honorable J.W. Calhoun, President, who declared that the Board, after prayer led by Mr. Manson Nelson and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, was ready for the transaction of business.

 

Members present were Honorable J.W. Calhoun; Rev. Johnnie Brown; Mrs. Marie Cowan; Mr. Jerry King; Mrs. Polly Miley; Mr. Manson Nelson; Mr. Charles Partridge; Mr. Walter Stampley; and Mrs. Georgia Washington.

 

Members absent:  None

 

Superintendent Lee introduced Mr. Howard Jackson, Principal of Ferriday Junior High, who presented awards to the winners of the parishwide Quiz Bowl from FJH 7th and 8th grade teams and the Grand Champion team.  Sixth grade winners were from Monterey.  Each team was presented a plaque, and Grand Champion team members received individual plaques and medallions.

 

Dr. Pete Peterman, Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction, introduced the valedictorian and salutatorian from each of the parish's high schools and presented them with certificates and cash awards.  The valedictorians received $200.00 and the salutatorians received $100.00.  Students are as follows:

 

            Clarence Edward Howington - FHS Valedictorian

            Otis Odoms - FHS Salutatorian

            Bradley Lane Tiffee - MHS Valedictorian

            Leslie Darlene Smalling - MHS Salutatorian

            Jeffrey Banks III - VHS Valedictorian

            Robert Todd Braley - VHS Salutatorian

 

A parent of a Vidalia High School student requested to appear before the board in reference to his child being allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies, after having failed a portion of the Graduation Exit Exam (GEE).  After discussion, Superintendent Lee's recommendation not to hear the plea was accepted. 

 

It was moved by Mr. Partridge, seconded by Mrs. Washington and carried unanimously to advertise for roof repairs at Ferriday Junior High gym.

 

Mr. Tom O'Neal, Director of Business Affairs, discussed the financial report and answered questions.

 

At the request of Mr. O'Neal, it was moved by Mr. Partridge, seconded by Rev. Brown and carried unanimously to postpone Item VI. (Budget Revisions) until next month.

 

It was moved by Mr. Partridge, seconded by Rev. Brown and carried unanimously to approve Superintendent Lee's vacation for June 21-25 1993. (five days)

 

It was moved by Mr. Partridge, seconded by Rev. Brown and carried unanimously to approve July 20, 1993 as the regular board meeting for July.

 

It was moved by Rev. Brown, seconded by Mr. Stampley and carried unanimously to approve a farmout on land Section 64, TLN, R8E transferring drilling rights from KFG to Tecton.

 

It was moved by Mr. Stampley and seconded by Mrs. Miley to move into Executive Session at six twenty-two (6:22) o'clock p.m.  The motion passed 7-2 with Mr. King and Mr. Partridge voting no. 

 

It was moved by Mr. Nelson, seconded by Rev. Brown and carried unanimously to return to Open Session at seven seventeen (7:17) o'clock p.m.

 

During the session, Superintendent Lee's evaluation and a personnel matter, which required no action was discussed by the board.

 

It was moved by Rev. Brown, seconded by Mrs. Washington and carried unanimously to accept Superintendent Lee's observation.  Report to be given at a later date.

 

It was moved by Rev. Brown, seconded by Mrs. Miley and carried unanimously to adjourn at seven twenty (7:20) o'clock p.m.
