SEX EDUCATION

 

 

In order to better educate and meet the growing awareness of today's youth, instruction in sex education for students in grades 7 - 12 within existing courses of study, including, but not limited to, home economics, life sciences, or physical education.  "Sex education" shall mean the dissemination of factual biological or pathological information that is related to the human reproductive system and may include the study of venereal disease, childbirth, puberty, menstruation, menopause, birth control, and any other topics related to human sexuality.  "Sex education" shall not include religious beliefs, values, customs, practices in human sexuality nor subjective moral and ethical judgments.  No sex education instruction shall be provided in grades K - 6.  All sex education instruction within a particular course shall be clearly identified as such.

 

A written notice shall be sent to all parents of students who may be scheduled in a class offering sex education information.  This notice shall be sent each school year to advise parents of their right under law to request that their child be excused from such instruction without penalty or loss of academic credit.  In such cases, the teacher may substitute other appropriate instructional activities in place of the sex education instruction.  Parents must make such requests in writing to the principal of the school their child attends.

 

A parental review committee shall be established to review and approve materials used in instruction and to make recommendations to the Board.
